We all thought it would have been easier. For long months the confinement kept us in a state of suspension, thoughts and emotions could not be choked in and needed to be let out. Writing through the pandemic seemed to be the simplest way, what but write at a time like this? So, within a few days dozens of ideas and writing projects jumped out and started to pile up in a new computer folder with a temporary name.

Some things are easier said than done, and any new initiative needs to be given a proper title. So fortunately enough, this one soon found a simple and natural encouragement – the direct translation of the existing student review of our school, La Cicuta, which in English turns out to be the combination of two words, “hem” (border, edge) and “lock” (also meaning to join, unite); here it is, “The Hemlock”, sounding like a suggestion, or an omen.

Each of the contributors accepted the challenge with strenuous commitment and pride. Most of them attending the first years of High School, submitted highly creative and original content, both for articles and graphics. Some of them ventured to write and proofread pieces of other students; some others have learned the ways to promote and to publish a school magazine on a new online platform. All of them have contributed with their unique passion for the English language, eager to use it publicly, for the first time, with one, exceptional common talent: the courage to be imperfect, to experiment with a new medium of expression which brings new perspectives and challenges. A special mention goes to the students of the graphic department who submitted their drafts for the Logo of The Hemlock: only one won the selection, but they all deserve to be displayed.

This first issue is also an invitation to all students of our school who want to try their hand at writing in English, with no restrictions on topics or creative formats, since we accept any original content that can be published on a digital platform. There are no essential basic requirements for being involved in our Newsroom, anyone can take part with graphic contributions such as photographs, drawings, comic strips, or written pieces ranging from personal narrative, to poetry and reviews.

Welcome to The Hemlock!
